The rise of billion-dollar companies, trillion-dollar enterprises, and gigafactories is one of the greatest achievements of modern economics. We should celebrate innovation, ambition, and the entrepreneurs who build them. But this is the beginning of the journey — not its destination.
Money is often described as the lifeblood of an economy. Like blood, it must circulate to keep the entire body healthy. When circulation slows, growth weakens, opportunities diminish, and communities are left behind. Letter 176 measured that circulation as speed — the Federal Reserve's own velocity of money, still running below its late-twentieth-century range. This letter measures a second, quieter dimension of the same idea: not just how fast capital moves, but how far it travels before it stops moving at all.
The natural instinct of capital is to seek greater returns, and there is nothing wrong with success. But if economic systems encourage capital to accumulate without creating new opportunities elsewhere, we risk mistaking concentration for progress. Letter 175 already documented one version of this: more than half of all US venture capital firms sit in just three metro areas, and firms cluster disproportionately in the regions where venture investing has already succeeded before. That is capital moving fast, by Letter 176's measure. By this letter's measure — how many genuinely new places it reaches — the same pattern looks considerably less dynamic.
Two days before this letter was written, Trinidad and Tobago signed a trio of agreements with US technology and services firms that could bring more than $5 billion in investment to the twin-island republic — the first data center and AI infrastructure agreements of their kind between major US tech companies and any Caribbean nation. Against an economy of roughly $28 billion, that is not a marginal addition. It is a single set of agreements with the scale to move a national growth trajectory.
Trinidad is not an isolated case. Google has committed to building a data hub in the Dominican Republic, anchored by submarine cable infrastructure connecting directly to the United States. Guyana's oil-led economy is projected to grow 16.3% in 2026 — the fastest in the Caribbean — generating the energy investment that data infrastructure needs as an input. The University of the West Indies has launched a region-wide AI research cluster and finalized a regional AI policy framework, with its first operational hub beginning rollout across all UWI campuses this August. Land, power, and connectivity — the three things a data center actually requires — are arriving in the Caribbean roughly together, for the first time, in the same eighteen-month window.
The hidden gems of tomorrow may not be found only in the world's largest cities. They may emerge from small islands, remote regions, and overlooked communities. A single world-class data centre, an AI research hub, a robotics campus, or a clean-energy facility can transform the economic future of a small nation. Geography is becoming less important than connectivity, talent, and vision.
The clearest evidence for this claim is not the Caribbean but a case where remoteness itself became the asset rather than the obstacle. In Canada, First Nations communities — for decades treated as economically disadvantaged specifically because of low population density and distance from major centers — are now assessed as holding a genuine comparative advantage for hosting AI data infrastructure, precisely because of that same remoteness, where local consent and equity participation are part of the deal rather than an afterthought. The characteristic that excluded these communities from the last century's growth model is the same characteristic an AI-era infrastructure economy is now willing to pay a premium for.
Let money breathe. When capital reaches more people, more places, and more ideas, markets become stronger, innovation accelerates, and humanity advances together.
The next generation of economics should not ask only, "How do we build bigger companies?" It should also ask, "How do we enable more places to participate in prosperity?" The future belongs not only to the giants, but also to the hidden gems waiting for the right investment, the right technology, and the freedom for capital to move with purpose.
This is not a call to romanticize small places or pretend that every remote region is one data center away from transformation — Letter 175's own caution about Political and Energy Capital applies here too: a $5 billion commitment is not the same as a $5 billion outcome, and the gap between signed agreement and operational campus is, as Caribbean commentators covering the Trinidad deal have already noted, the real story still to be written. But the direction of the evidence is now hard to dismiss as wishful thinking. Where land, power, connectivity, and policy align — even briefly, even in places with no prior claim to being a technology hub — capital has shown it will go there.
Letter 176 argued that money should move faster. This letter argues it should also move farther — to places that have never been considered investment destinations for frontier infrastructure, not because those places lack the fundamentals, but because capital's default instinct is to return to where it has already succeeded. Trinidad and Tobago's $5 billion week is one data point, not a trend line. But it is exactly the kind of data point this letterhead exists to notice before it becomes obvious to everyone else.
