⚡ The Fault Line in Modern Finance

Seven companies now command a third of the S&P 500 and $22 trillion in combined market value — a concentration higher than the 2000 dot-com peak, this time backed by real profit. The quieter number sitting underneath it: money is moving through the economy at barely above its pandemic-era crawl. This letter prices both, and the case for redirecting even a slice of capital toward where it actually turns over.

Seven companies. $22 trillion. A third of the S&P 500. That is not a rhetorical framing — it is the literal, current state of the index that anchors most of the world's retirement savings, and this letter is about the two numbers that matter most once you accept it: how concentrated the winning is, and how slowly the resulting capital actually moves once it gets there.

A Concentration Higher Than the Dot-Com Peak — But Different in Kind

The Magnificent Seven — Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia, Meta, and Tesla — command 32.5% of the S&P 500 as of July 2026, a combined market capitalisation of $22 trillion, up from 12.4% just eleven years ago. Widen the lens to the top ten names and the figure crosses 40% of the index's total value. For direct comparison: at the height of the dot-com bubble in 2000, the top ten companies accounted for roughly 27% of the index. Today's concentration is genuinely higher than that speculative peak — the number this letter's own framing would call the "fault line."

The critical difference, and the reason this is not simply 2000 repeating: Russell Investments estimates the Magnificent Seven generate close to 70% of the S&P 500's total economic profit. The dot-com leaders were frequently pre-revenue; today's mega-caps are the most profitable free-cash-flow generators in the index. Concentration built on genuine earnings is a different risk profile than concentration built on narrative alone — but it is still concentration, and the mechanical dynamic that built it is self-reinforcing: capitalisation-weighted index funds are structurally required to buy more of a stock as it rises, which pushes the valuation higher, which forces the next round of passive buying. Every dollar flowing into a default S&P 500 index fund today is, by construction, making a larger bet on seven names than it was making a decade ago, whether the investor intended that or not.

The Quieter Number: Money Is Barely Moving

Velocity of M2 — the rate at which each dollar in the money supply changes hands to purchase goods and services — sat at 1.41 as of Q1 2026, per Federal Reserve data. That is barely above the all-time low of 1.13 recorded in the depths of the 2020 pandemic shutdown, and dramatically below the record high of 2.19 set in July 1997. M2 itself has grown to $22.8 trillion. Put simply: there is more money in the system than at almost any point in history, and each dollar of it is doing less economic work than it has in nearly three decades. In the identity MV = PY, a low and falling V means expansions in the money supply translate less effectively into actual nominal economic activity — liquidity that exists on paper but isn't circulating through real transactions.

This is not unrelated to the concentration story above. Capital flowing disproportionately into a small number of mega-cap technology names — long-duration assets like data centers, intellectual property, and financial instruments rather than labour-intensive, rapid-turnover activity — is structurally a lower-velocity use of capital than the same dollar spent on goods, services, or deployed into economies where a marginal dollar of investment gets re-spent multiple times over. High savings rates concentrated among the wealthiest holders, and record corporate cash balances at the mega-caps themselves, reinforce the same pattern: liquidity that pools rather than circulates.

The problem was never American technological excellence. It's the absence of a counterbalancing mechanism that lets capital move as easily toward smaller, faster-turnover economies as it moves toward seven already-dominant companies.

2026 Is Already Producing a Natural Test Case

The market itself is running a live experiment in de-concentration this year. SpaceX, OpenAI, and Anthropic are all expected to reach public markets by year-end 2026, with SpaceX and OpenAI each projected to carry valuations above $1 trillion — a real, dated event that will mechanically dilute the Magnificent Seven's share of major indices the moment any of them are added. Separately, equal-weight index strategies are already seeing the rotation this letter's framework predicts: the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF gained roughly 5.5% year-to-date through Q1 2026 even as the cap-weighted index stayed comparatively flat — early, real evidence that capital is already testing the exits from maximum concentration, not merely a theoretical possibility.

Where This Publication's Own Coverage Already Is the Thesis

This letter's own house view does not require abandoning US mega-cap technology exposure — the underlying earnings power is real, and this publication has covered several of these companies' own infrastructure buildouts directly. The more interesting implication is what a strategic, even modest, reallocation toward smaller and faster-circulating economies actually looks like in practice. This publication's own New Avenues series — now 32 country profiles deep, from Vietnam and Malaysia to Kenya and Poland — is, in effect, a running, dated catalogue of exactly the "hidden gem" reallocation this letter's framework describes: smaller markets, real demographic and digital-leapfrogging tailwinds, and in several cases (Kenya's mobile-money penetration, Vietnam's manufacturing-led growth) economies where a dollar of capital plausibly circulates faster than the same dollar parked in a mega-cap balance sheet. None of those markets individually move the needle on global capital allocation. The point, consistent with the source framework behind this letter, is that even a 5-10% strategic shift executed across enough institutional portfolios over a decade could measurably alter global flow dynamics without requiring anyone to bet against American technology leadership.

Where the Money Actually Flows

Reducing the Friction Itself. Visa (NYSE: V) sits directly on the infrastructure layer this thesis depends on — the cross-border payment rails that make it operationally possible for capital to reach smaller, less liquid economies at all. A genuine, profitable, already-global business that benefits mechanically from any real increase in cross-border money movement, independent of which specific "hidden gem" market wins.

The Domestic De-Concentration Trade. The Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (NYSE: RSP) is the simplest, most liquid instrument for expressing the concentration-risk half of this thesis directly — systematically capping every S&P 500 constituent at the same starting weight, redistributing exposure away from the Magnificent Seven without requiring a view on any single name's future.

The Verdict

The Magnificent Seven's 32.5% share of the S&P 500 and 70% share of its economic profit are not a bubble in the 2000 sense — they are backed by real, durable earnings power, and this letter is not calling for their dismantling. But M2 velocity sitting at 1.41, barely above its pandemic trough and far below its 1997 peak, is the honest cost of that concentration: an enormous pool of capital compounding inside a small number of long-duration assets rather than circulating through the broader economy. The correction is not to abandon US tech leadership — it is to deliberately widen the aperture, using instruments like RSP for domestic de-concentration and payment-rail infrastructure like Visa to make it operationally cheaper for capital to reach faster-circulating, currently under-owned economies. The risk to this thesis is not that concentration reverses on its own — mechanically, cap-weighted index buying keeps reinforcing it — it's that the SpaceX/OpenAI/Anthropic IPO wave provides only temporary, cosmetic dilution rather than the structural rebalancing this letter is actually pricing for.
