But the same category is now testing how much it can paywall after the sale, and quietly running an uncontrolled experiment on distraction and eye strain at genuine scale.

Display-less smart glasses shipped roughly 2.25 million units in the first quarter of 2026 alone — matching the entire category's full-year 2024 volume in a single quarter, a 167 percent year-on-year surge. Eyewear with displays, tracked separately, grew 86 percent over the same window. This is not a speculative growth story being told about the future; it is a shipment number already booked. The more interesting question is what happens next, across four fronts: the real economics, the health and safety record, the fit for people who already wear prescription glasses, and the business model now being tested on the people who bought in first.

Every prior generation of smart eyewear, including Google Glass a decade earlier, failed this specific test before failing any technical one. The fashion partnership was not marketing polish; it was the actual product strategy, and it is why Meta is reportedly doubling planned production capacity with EssilorLuxottica to as much as 20 million units by the end of 2026, with room to scale further to 30 million.

The AI Advantage: Why This Decade Succeeds Where the Last One Failed

Fashion explains why people were willing to wear Ray-Ban Meta. It does not explain why the glasses are useful enough to wear twice. That answer is AI, and it is worth stating as a general thesis this letter will keep returning to: no hardware category built around ambient, always-on assistance goes anywhere near mainstream adoption until the underlying AI is simultaneously capable enough and cheap enough to run continuously without destroying battery life or requiring a data centre in your pocket. Google Glass launched in 2013 into a world of scripted voice commands and no real visual understanding. Ray-Ban Meta launched into a world where a glasses-mounted camera can identify what you are looking at, translate a menu in real time, and hold a multi-turn conversation about it — because the underlying models improved roughly in step with the hardware, not ahead of it or behind it.

The specific capabilities doing the work are real-time visual recognition, live translation, and contextual memory across a conversation rather than a single command — exactly the features Meta and Google are now racing to differentiate on, not the optics or the frame design. Meta AI's installed base exceeds 1 billion monthly active users against Gemini's 750 million-plus, and that gap matters here specifically because a smart-glasses AI assistant is only as good as the model sitting behind it: better frames do not compensate for a worse assistant, in the way a better phone case never compensated for a worse operating system. Conversation Focus itself — the feature now at the centre of Meta's paywall controversy — runs entirely on-device, which is itself a meaningful engineering marker: on-device inference at this quality level was not achievable in a consumer wearable's power and thermal envelope even three years ago.

Most coverage of this category treats ophthalmology purely as a source of caution. That undersells a genuine, current benefit running the other direction. AI-assisted diagnostics is one of optometry's named trends for 2026, and EssilorLuxottica — Meta's own manufacturing partner — already sells Nuance Audio, a product combining vision correction with built-in hearing aids for mild-to-moderate hearing loss in a single frame, explicitly marketed as assistive technology beyond vision alone. Separately, peer-reviewed ophthalmology research has begun testing head-mounted AR and VR devices for genuine clinical diagnostic use, including test-retest reliability studies quantifying relative afferent pupillary defect — a real neurological eye-exam measure — using the same class of hardware this letter otherwise scrutinises for its distraction risk. Smart contact lenses capable of tracking blinking and diagnosing ocular conditions directly are in active development as a related but distinct product category. The honest framing: the same optical and sensor stack raising eye-strain questions is simultaneously being explored as a legitimate diagnostic and assistive-care tool, and both findings can be true about the same underlying hardware.

Safety While Travelling: A Real, Measured Risk

This is the area with the most direct regulatory response already in motion. The Federal Aviation Administration has published research specifically on head-worn displays and distraction. An 80-participant study found that smart glasses can narrow a user's field of view and measurably distract attention, and multiple safety guides now explicitly recommend against reading, scrolling, or messaging on smart glasses while driving — treating it identically to distracted-driving rules for handheld phones. Several U.S. states have already introduced specific bans on using AR-display products while driving, ahead of any federal standard. The honest position, consistent across ophthalmology, human-factors, and road-safety sources: audio-only or camera-only interaction while walking or driving carries manageable risk; actively reading overlays, scrolling, or messaging while in motion does not, and should be treated exactly like handheld phone use under existing distracted-operation law.

The Business Model: Razor, Blade, and Now a Retrofit

Meta's monetisation architecture for Ray-Ban glasses runs three layers simultaneously: a hardware sale priced for adoption rather than margin, a behavioural-data layer feeding Meta's core advertising engine, and — newly added — a direct subscription layer for AI features. Evercore's own modelling suggests this subscription layer could generate an incremental $2.5 billion in annual revenue at just a 1 percent adoption rate across Meta's 5.9 billion cumulative daily active users platform-wide. This is a genuinely novel structure for consumer hardware: R&D on AI features can be monetised continuously rather than recouped entirely in the initial sale, inverting the usual commoditisation pressure that has historically punished consumer electronics margins over time.

The honest complication surfaced in the past month: Meta retrofitted a usage cap onto Conversation Focus — an AI feature already included in glasses customers had already purchased outright — capping free use at three hours monthly (roughly six minutes a day) unless customers pay $19.99 monthly for expanded access. The feature runs entirely on-device, with no server costs Meta can point to as justification, which is precisely why the move has drawn sustained criticism, including from accessibility advocates: some hearing-impaired users had adopted Conversation Focus as a genuine daily hearing-assistance tool, meaning the retrofitted cap functions, in practice, as a $240-a-year charge for something closer to a medical accommodation than an entertainment feature.

Google and Samsung jointly unveiled Android XR audio-first eyewear at Google I/O 2026, co-developed with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster — Google reportedly invested $100 million in Gentle Monster alone — leaning on Gemini's 750 million-plus monthly active users against Meta AI's over 1 billion. Apple's reported pivot is the most consequential single data point for the category's next phase: multiple reports now indicate no active Vision Pro headset development, with Apple's spatial computing effort redirected entirely toward Ray-Ban-competitive smart glasses targeted for late 2026 or 2027, camera and microphone included, Siri as the interface.

Three risks deserve equal billing with the growth numbers. First, the Conversation Focus retrofit is a genuine trust risk, not a one-off: if capital markets and Meta's own leadership treat it as a successful template, expect the same pattern — sell hardware, then meter previously-included AI features — to spread across the industry exactly as one industry analysis already predicts. Second, the distraction and eye-strain research base, while consistent in its conclusions, remains genuinely limited in scale and duration; "no evidence of harm yet" is not the same claim as "proven safe long-term," and this letter treats that distinction as real. Third, the fashion-forward design that won Meta the first round of this race is also the thing most likely to normalise always-on cameras in public and private spaces faster than privacy norms or regulation can keep pace — a social-acceptance risk sitting underneath the adoption numbers, not separate from them.

The Verdict

The growth in this category is not hype — 167 percent quarterly growth and a hardware line already outselling its own company's VR division are operating facts, not projections. Meta has won the first round decisively, on fashion partnership and volume, not superior technology, and has built a genuinely novel three-layer monetisation model on top of that lead. But the same letter that reports the growth has to report the retrofit: a company charging customers after the fact for a feature functioning as hearing assistance for some users, while distraction research and state-level driving bans are still catching up to a product now shipping at tens of millions of units annually. Real growth and real business-model risk are not contradictory findings here — they are the same story, told honestly.
