How one number — a quadrillion dollars by 2040 — became a North Star, then a thesis, then an ongoing journal, then an operational framework, and finally a commitment to be checked before anyone forces the issue. The full history, in order, for the record.
Every piece of research we publish sits underneath a single number, and that number came before any of the research did. One quadrillion dollars in global GDP by 2040. We did not arrive at $1Q by modelling our way there and discovering a big number at the end. We started with the number, because a number that large forces a different kind of question than a modest one does. A modest forecast asks "how much will things grow." A quadrillion-dollar target asks "what would have to be true for this to happen at all" — and that second question is the one that actually produces research, not just commentary. This letter is the full history of what came after we asked it, including the part where we caught ourselves getting it wrong and fixed it in public.
The $1Q Vision came first, and it came as a direction, not a forecast. Global GDP sat at roughly $105 trillion when we started. A quadrillion is nearly ten times that. We were explicit from the outset that this was not a projection built from a spreadsheet — it was a North Star, the kind of fixed point that tells you which way to walk without promising exactly where or when you will land. Four engines were visible even at the start: AI and automation, the energy transition, the ascent of emerging markets, and a demographic dividend arriving on an unusually convenient schedule. None of those four were speculative. What was missing was a way to think about how they would compound together, and what could stop them from doing so. The North Star gave us the destination. It did not yet give us the map.
A direction without named mechanisms is just enthusiasm, and we did not want to publish enthusiasm. The $1Q Thesis was the attempt to fix that: sixteen distinct, individually arguable forces — AI, energy, demographics, trade rewiring, the ocean and space economy, biotech, and the rest — each one a claim that could be examined, tracked, and eventually proven wrong on its own terms, rather than one large unfalsifiable vision. The thesis document is the anchor every other piece of NGE research ultimately refers back to, including research about countries and companies that, on the surface, have nothing to do with a quadrillion dollars. China, Japan's governance reforms, the deep mine of critical minerals, the trillion-dollar pharma race — each of those pieces is one of the sixteen forces examined at ground level. The thesis was the moment the North Star stopped being a single sentence and became sixteen separate things we could be wrong about individually.

Naming sixteen forces created an obligation we hadn't fully reckoned with: somebody had to keep watching them. The Trajectory is that watching, done in public, on no fixed schedule, published only when something was actually worth recording. Its own opening entry describes exactly this — a journal that tests a hypothesis against reality slowly and honestly, without rushing to conclusions, refusing to predict and committing instead to observe. Nature's Grand Design, the Deep Mine, the Great Energy Ascent, the Windows Moment for Robotics, China and the $1Q, the Governance Revolution in Japan — each entry takes one force from the thesis and checks it against what is actually happening in the world, in real time, as the evidence arrives. The Trajectory is where the sixteen forces stopped being a list and started being a live experiment.
Four white papers in, and years of Trajectory entries in, we still hadn't answered the load-bearing question sitting underneath everything else: if the sixteen forces are real and the North Star is genuine, what does the actual arithmetic of getting there look like, and on what timeline? The Theseus Trajectory — White Paper 5 — is our answer. It took the North Star's direction and the thesis's sixteen named forces and compressed the ones that matter most for pure growth arithmetic into five compounding engines, then built a real model around them: a growth rate with an honest sensitivity range, not one confident number; Six Filters naming the specifically human ways the whole thing could stall — distribution, governance, repricing, cognition, politics, and the ethical and environmental costs we owed the reader an honest accounting of; a scenario fan ranking four futures by probability instead of picking a winner; and a fifteen-year timeline specific enough that someone could actually check it later. White Paper 5 is the moment the North Star became something you could build a plan against, not just believe in.

Writing White Paper 5, we knew it would make dozens of specific, checkable claims — fusion timelines, adoption paths for Blessings Equity, how evenly AI productivity gains would spread. We also knew that some of those specific claims would land wrong, not because the framework was wrong, but because nineteen years is a long time and reality doesn't move in straight lines. The Six Filters, the scenario-planning method, the Theseus metaphor itself could all still be doing real work even while three or four individual dates come in off-schedule.
The trouble is that from the outside, those two kinds of being wrong look identical. A reader who notices a specific date slip doesn't automatically know whether that's a rounding error inside a framework that's still holding, or evidence the whole thesis was hollow. Without a mechanism for making that distinction visible, White Paper 5 had exactly one way to be judged: right or wrong, on the specifics, with no room for "the specifics moved but the structure held." That is not a fair test of a long-horizon thesis, and it is not one we were willing to let stand by default.
So we wrote a progress report to a paper that hadn't had time to be tested yet. That sounds backwards, and it is meant to. Part B doesn't wait for 2028 to arrive — it simulates arriving there, using the trends and announced plans already visible in 2026, and asks the only question that actually matters for a framework this long: when the specifics diverge from plan, does the underlying structure still explain what's happening?
Running that exercise early, rather than waiting two years to run it for real, forced us to find the seams in White Paper 5 before a reader would find them for us. Where would fusion timelines plausibly diverge into private and state-led tracks instead of arriving as one unified date? Where would Blessings Equity actually land first, if we took seriously which sovereign wealth funds are already positioning for a post-hydrocarbon world? Where would AI productivity gains concentrate instead of spreading evenly, based on what 2026 deployment already shows? Part B's answer, in every case, was that the Six Filters and the scenario fan already had room for the surprise. They didn't need new categories bolted on. That is the actual test of whether a framework was worth publishing, and it's a test we could only pass by running it, not by leaving the paper alone and hoping.

The first draft of Part B made a mistake we caught before publishing, and it's worth naming honestly rather than quietly fixing and moving on. It was written as though it were a real report from 2028 — declarative, past-tense, "this happened, that didn't." That framing borrows credibility it hasn't earned. A document dated to a future it cannot actually know, written with the confidence of hindsight, is speculative fiction wearing an institutional report's clothes — the same failure mode, one level up, that we were trying to avoid with White Paper 5 in the first place.
The fix wasn't to soften the content. It was to be honest about what kind of document it is: a scenario exercise, authored in 2026, simulating a checkpoint that hasn't happened, built from trends and announced plans that are real today even though their outcomes aren't yet known. "Helion is targeting 2028" became "if Helion's announced timeline holds." "Fusion has diverged" became "fusion may not be delayed so much as diverging, if both currently announced timelines hold roughly as stated." Small changes in wording. The difference in what the document is allowed to claim is not small at all.
We are putting this full history in writing, separate from all five documents, because the method matters as much as any one conclusion. The commitment we're making is this: White Paper 5 is not a forecast we quietly retire if it ages badly. It is a framework we agreed, in public, to check against reality — and Part B is the first checking, run early, on purpose, using a scenario rather than a false claim to hindsight. When real 2028 data exists, we expect to run this exercise again, for real. The difference between a prediction and a framework is whether the person who made it is still willing to be checked once the world has had a chance to disagree with them. We would rather be the shop that revisits its own numbers than the one that quietly stops mentioning them.
Five documents, one idea, each one built because the one before it created an obligation the next one had to answer. A number becomes a direction. A direction becomes sixteen named forces. Sixteen forces become an ongoing watch. The watch becomes a model precise enough to be wrong about. And the model earns the right to be trusted only by agreeing, before it has to, to be checked. That is the whole history. We intend to keep adding to it.
