Healing Miracle Frequencies has 50 million streams. Soundverse generates binaural beats for meditation. Dozens of apps claim to use 528 Hz to repair DNA, 396 Hz to release guilt, and 432 Hz tuning to align with the universe. The market has moved faster than the science — and the science itself acknowledges this directly. A 2026 Frontiers in Psychology systematic review states plainly: "while EEG measures can confirm genuine shifts in alpha, theta, or gamma power, such data are rarely incorporated, leaving causal links between brainwave entrainment and cognitive-emotional benefits largely speculative."
This is the gap. The commercial players are selling product. The academic literature is accumulating small-sample pilot studies without biomarkers. And the ancient wisdom traditions — Indian ragas composed for specific times and emotional states, Tibetan overtone chanting, Gregorian modes, African ceremonial rhythms — are being exploited as marketing material rather than treated as centuries of observational data worth taking seriously. Systematically compile every peer-reviewed study on sound-consciousness relationships. Separate established findings from speculative claims from folk tradition. Create a public, open-access evidence database that distinguishes what is proved, what is open, and what is unsupported — the honest map the field currently lacks.

A research coalition — anchored in a university, funded by a foundation, and governed by scientific rather than commercial incentives — can do the work the commercial players cannot.
Musicology + neuroscience programs in the same institution. Programs already exist at King's College London, the University of Barcelona, and Stanford's CCRMA. An interdisciplinary PhD dissertation or group research project could begin Phase 1 and 2 with existing resources.
